So we beat on, boats against the current, borne back ceaselessly into the past.”

NTI Work1/4/2018
For today's NTI assignment, find a current news article, online or print, and write a one paragraph summary of the article. The article can be on any subject as long as it is school appropriate (hard news, features, sports, etc.) Your current news article must come from a reliable news source. Your summary must include the title of the article, the author, the source, and all of the main points of the article. I will not be in class tomorrow, so you all will have a substitute. Your assignment while I am gone will be to separate yourselves into four groups, take turns reading your summary to your group, and as a group discuss the main points of each article shared as well as everyone's opinion on the matter. My plan is to work with current news articles each week in order to better prepare you for the AP Language and Composition exam. As discussed in class, the argument essay on the exam will provide you with a topic and ask you to defend, refute, or qualify. You must provide plenty of evidence to support your argument, which often requires you to recall knowledge on current or recent events as evidence. 1/5/17
For today, read the text I have posted below, "On Poverty" by Peter Singer. Familiarize yourself with his argument and be prepared to give an argument in defense of Peter Singer and his views on eliminating poverty as well as against Peter Singer and his views on poverty. On Monday we will do an exercise called Quick Debate and I will assign you to either defend or refute his argument, so you must be prepared for both. For the Quick Debate, you will be placed in groups of three (someone defending Singer, someone refuting Singer, and a judge) and you will each have 90 seconds to present your argument to the judge who will then decide a winner of the debate before you rotate to the next judge. |
